Russia pushes Facebook to open research center

MOSCOW – Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg was in Moscow on Monday, where officials were pressing him to expand the company's operations in Russia.

Russia's communications minister tweeted that Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev urged the social media giant's founder to abandon plans to lure away Russian programmers and instead open a research center in Moscow.

A Facebook spokeswoman, who refused to be named because she wasn't authorized to discuss the matter with the media, said the company has no immediate expansion plans for Russia.

Zuckerberg, who ditched his trademark hoodie and jeans for a suit and tie for his meeting with Medvedev, was visiting Russia on a world tour of programming contests to identify new talent.

Russian Web companies often command larger shares of the domestic market than their U.S. counterparts. Facebook has roughly 9 million users in Russia, while domestic clone VK has around 34 million.

Medvedev has cultivated a tech-friendly image since launching his modernization program while president of Russia from 2008 until this May, when Vladimir Putin returned for his third term as president.

The first of three 2012 presidential debates will be aired live this Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. ET on the major networks and news channels. Unlike four years ago, you'll also have the option to stream the broadcast live on your computer, phone or tablet.

YouTube will stream the all three presidential debates, and the vice presidential debate, on its Elections Hub

. Commentary before and after the debate at the University of Denver will be hosted on all YouTube election partner channels such as ABC, Al JazeeraEnglish, BuzzFeed, Univision and the Wall Street Journal.

However, streaming YouTube won't be quite as convenient for iPhone users who upgraded to iOS 6

, since Apple has removed the YouTube app. But you can download Google's YouTube iPhone app for free from the App Store. Apple iPad users will have to be content with enlarging the iPhone display for their devices or by going to YouTube through the Safari browser

, which offers a better user interface for pre- and post-debate videos.

For instance, YouTube Election Hub today is featuring a look back at key points in past debates, including President Reagan's "there you go again" and Sen. Lloyd Bentsen's "you're no Jack Kennedy" zingers. That and many other videos appear on the mobile browser YouTube version, but can't be found on the iPhone version without a search.

Those who have mastered double-screen viewing and tweeting may want to use the hashtag #debatedenver that school officials, students

and the media are using to report on campus preparations. Only about 200 students were lucky enough to score tickets for Wednesday's event, but DebateFest student organizers say their interactive meeting ground on campus will show the debate on big screens, host "rally alley" where students will set up information stations in support of candidates and offer issue-related material and feed the crowd with a dozen Denver food trucks in Oval Eatery. Still, attendance has been limited to 5,000.

The biggest audience for the debate will be viewers at home or on the road, which could reach 80 million, University of Denver's vice chancellor David Greenberg has said. Just how many will be watching on smartphones and tablets compared to TVs won't be known until the viewing audience is tabulated.

NEW YORK – They’re the original fanboys.

Bill Gates and Paul Allen, who co-founded Microsoft Corp. on a snowy day in Dec. 1974 at the tender age of 21, both left the company they created for other pursuits. But both have stayed in the loop on technology -- and recently weighed in on Windows 8.

“It’s a very big deal for Microsoft,” Gates said last week during an interview with the Associated Press. “I’ve been using it and I’m very pleased with it.”

“The hardware partners are doing great things to take advantage of the product,” Gates added.

Not to be outdone, Allen, who left the company in 1982 after becoming seriously ill with Hodgkin's lymphoma, published a full review of Windows 8

later that day.

“The new tablet features in Windows 8 are particularly bold and innovative. A few minor issues aside, I'm impressed,” Allen wrote on his website.

Allen admitted that the new operating system may prove confusing at first. Windows 8 is heavily slanted towards tablets and other new computing platforms, and adds a new interface mode with colorful tiles that launch into full-screen apps.

“There are a number of things introduced to Windows by the tablet aspect of the bimodal user experience that I found puzzling, especially for a traditional desktop user like myself,” he said.

Allen’s not alone. A recent poll by Computerworld found that fewer early adopters have taken to the new OS

than installed Windows 7 in 2009 in the weeks before it launched.

Just 0.3 percent of computers running Windows used Windows 8 in Sept., the tech news site reported, while at the end of Sept 2009, Windows 7 accounted for 1.64 percent of all Windows PCs -- that's five times as many influential, early-adopter types.

And in the past week, one analyst slashed sales expectations for Windows 8 powered ultrabooks while another said the company was taking a “big gamble” with the new OS.

Still, despite a few complaints about the interface, co-founder Allen was optimistic.

"I'm confident that Windows 8 offers the best of legacy Windows features with an eye toward a very promising future," he wrote.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was derided for wearing too much makeup in the company’s IPO video.

In the social network’s IPO video, Mark looked bizarre with a large amount of white eye makeup. Twitter users pointed out the problem. Large white circles are clearly visible around Facebook CEO’s eyes. Internet users also criticized him for the odd white makeup. Meanwhile, a Google+ user said the circles could just be tan lines from wearing sunglasses. It has been claimed that Mark Zuckerberg is an amateur when it comes to makeup.

The Facebook founder may control the world’s largest social networking site. As of February 2012, he holds 28.4 percent of the common stock and 56.9 percent of the voting power.

In 2010, he was named among worst dressed men of the year. He was ranked No.3. The computer billionaire’s simple dressed style is not highly appreciated in the media industry.

Mark Zuckerberg has had a slot in "The 2010 Celebrity Style Hall of Shame" by the U.S. men’s magazine for his simple wardrobe.

Mark was named in GQ’s list of the Worst Dressed In Silicon Valley.

VT1 (RIM) disclosed its vision for the long–awaitedBlackBerry 10 platform at the BlackBerry World conference in Orlando. The company has set out for itself in delivering the new platform.

Some new key features were demonstrated, including keyboard and gesture. The touch-based keyboard is perhaps the most shocking. Buttons are large and swipe gestures can be used to pull up symbols and numbers. RIM plans to integrate gesture controls into BB10. For instance, users can answer or reject calls by performing a long press then swiping up or down. The phone has been improved with the cameral software. Users can touch anywhere on a photo to go back in time after snapping it. The Waterloo-headquartered multinational telecommunications company is distributing a BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha device to help developers get started on the platform. This testing unit will support the developer community by proving necessary tools to build applications for BB10 devices. "Developers building for BlackBerry 10 will be able to easily create the kind of cutting-edge apps that deliver truly engaging experiences and ‘wow’ customers,” said Alec Saunders, vice president of Developer Relations and Ecosystems Development at RIM.

Research In Motion aimed to reserve huge market-share losses to Google Inc’s VT2 and VT3. The Waterloo-headquartered company is starting from scratch with its next-generation BlackBerry 10.

BlackBerry 10 has touch-sensitive frame which allows users to swipe to call up a menu.

Perhaps, RIM made its most crucial launch in its history this year.

The new on-screen VT4 offers predictive next word suggestions.

BlackBerry 10 platform will be compatible with few of the applications available for its existing phones.

The BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha has a 4.2-inch touchscreen at a resolution of 1,280 by 768 pixels and Micro USB for charging and debugging.

Some features of the BlackBerry 10 operating system running on a prototype device were revealed.
